I received a flyer from the Wisconsin Democrats accusing Governor Walker of wanting privatize hunting lands and turning Wisconsin into Texas, where private deer ranches are highly successful. Barrett spent yesterday campaigning on this flyer and has, of course, vowed to eliminate the “Deer Czar”.

In researching this topic, the only connection Dr. James Kroll has to Texas deer management practices is that he was born and lives there.

Attached is an article from The Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University - Kingsville.

- Deer ranches in TX existed much earlier than the 1960’s
- Better deer management in the 70’s and 80’s led to improved deer herds in TX.
- James Kroll is not credited once.

http://ckwri.tamuk.edu/news/news-item/article/research-scientist-chronicles-texas-deer-management-changes-1/

James Kroll’s resume (you’ll see he served as a teaching professor from 1973-1981):
http://forestry.sfasu.edu/faculty-staff/james-c.-kroll.html

And if you like to deer hunt, here are some of the things he has learned in his studies that just might help you have a better hunt next fall:

Here is a recap from our posting yesterday.

Keep in mind that this does not mean a particular candidate is in fact a conservative. Mostly, our recommendations resulted in their opponents public comments or actions regarding Act 10 (the collective bargaining law) or through a candidates past actions. For example, Judy Ashford is a liberal; but her opponent sponsored a bill to turn the jail into a homeless shelter and wanted a referendum against the Act 10. In otherwords, not as liberal has her opponent.

Act 10 is law and has survived the test of the court. Today’s candidates need to frame the discussion more into how to work within the new guidelines and come up with fiscally responsible budgets that also understand our economic times of less revenue.

We also picked candidates simply based on the fact their opponent signed the Recall Petitions. Recalling a governor over the introduction of legislation that passed the legislature is not a crime.

Ten of our recommendations won. We had some good victories in the Sauk Prairie and Spring Green school boards while Ruth Dawson’s win on the Sauk County board was huge in consideration the seat is based in Baraboo.

The Wisconsin State Journal also reported a few weeks ago about how the Madison teacher’s union is active in the Madison School board elections.

We pointed that out in Sauk Prairie last month. We discussed how the teacher’s union was active in the local school board election. It hit the Sauk Prairie Eagle and all of the candidates denied the activity and just coincidentally, all of their yard signs disappeared – despite having walked through the primary. A case of “now you see it, now you don’t” - or “you didn’t anything, capisce?”

If you read the Madison newspaper yesterday, the left owns the spring election. They have turned out better traditionally since about 1960. It’s time to start turning things around. We won’t do it overnight, unfortunately, but we need to start turning out for these important local races.

That being said, here is a simple voter’s guide based on the criteria established below.

APRIL 3, 2012 – SPRING ELECTION

Contested Races Only
* Conservative Choice. Recommendation based on local newspaper interviews and/or opponents roll in the Recall Election. Keep in mind, these individuals may not be actual conservatives, just not as left as their opponents. If you do not see a race, it is because we were not able to gather enough data to make a recommendation. These recommendations are not endorsements by the party or the author.

County Supervisor, District 2

The local papers are obsessed with everyone’s position on Act 10 (the collective bargaining bill). We thought we would go a step further and locate those candidates who signed up to Recall Walker (easily verifiable at http://www.iverifytherecall.com).

Disagreeing is one thing, but one has to question someone’s ability to lead local government when they believe that one bill, or one vote, is justification for throwing people out of office.

I support Senator Dale Schultz’ right to report to work and do is job. I just don’t like the way he is doing it.

Last summer, several of our county parties went to work recalling state senators who were suntanning at the CoCo Key Waterpark Resort in Rockford, Illinois while Governor Walker and the Republicans stayed home to get their work done.

The left, at the same time, launched recalls against the Republicans who reported to work and voted with Governor Walker. We supported those guys, not just for their vote, but we argued they did their job.

I absolutely oppose recalling Senator Schultz. I do not think 2014 can come soon enough. I disagree with Dale on the implications of Act 10. His reasoning that he was fearful of the protestors only lends them support. His failure to support the mining bill was wrong. The only people opposed to passing the “mining bill” are those determined to see Scott Walker fail and he fell for it.

Recalling Senator Schultz flies in the face of everything we have been doing to support Scott Walker and the Republican senators and rises to the heights of hypocritical.

Senator Jauch, on the other hand, took an Illinois sabbatical last year courtesy of the Wisconsin taxpayer.

If Dan Curran can force a recall, Dale will win - just like the Democrats who retained their seats - and Schultz will come out even stronger. His district leans left and he’ll have the Dems voting for him in force and no one on the ticket other than a Republican primary.

If you don’t think Schultz will survive, look no further than Luther Olsen. People were lining up to challenge him this year because he was too moderate. After last year’s recall effort, the only candidate forcing a primary is basically unheard of.

Recalling Schultz is not only the wrong thing to do - it will ultimately insure his survival.

I had to address RJ Johnson’s most recent argument in the Sauk Prairie Eagle accusing Republicans of suppressing the vote in a comparison to our efforts to show people how teachers are uniting to elect their employers - the school board.

I believe in every American’s right to vote and do not object to proving your residency as a requirement to do so. A driver’s license is required to register to vote under federal law. Asking to verify you are the same voter at the polls is not voter suppression.

My mother is a die-hard liberal. I believe she voted for Richard Nixon and has regretted it ever since. We agree on very little politically. In 2008, she voted for Obama… ONLY after I secured an absentee ballot for her. She was hospitalized and would have lost her right to vote. A priviledge she takes very seriously.

I know the Town of Merrimac, where I serve as clerk, very well. I know who the conservatives are, who the liberals are, and who the independents are. Everyone here gets to vote and I will protect their right to do it.

I have faxed military and overseas ballots. I have taken absentee ballot requests and ballots to people when they cannot come in to the town hall. I argue that 95% these folks have been liberals.

I objected to the Republican Party of Wisconsin’s (RPW) request for a list of absentee voters - based only on the personal security of our residents. I think that they have the right to vote absentee and I object to freely giving anyone a list telling them who won’t be home on Election Day.

Obama won big in Merrimac. Maybe having the Republicans direct mail and robo-call our absentees would have changed that, but it is what it is. I don’t think people have the right to know who is out of town. If RPW and the Wisconsin Democrats can have the list - who is to prevent anyone requesting that list from getting the same? Felons can make open records requests - there is no law preventing that - and I just think it is a bad idea to provide them with a list of target homes for theft.

I support the residency rule. It exists in several states - including Illinois. You can still vote absentee in your former district.

I support showing identification at the polls. You showed it to us once - you probably still have it.

I think students should vote in their home district, not on college campuses, unless they are given statewide and federal offices only because they’re not smart enough to request an absentee ballot from home.

I do not support people who are not residents of Wisconsin or the United States voting here on Election Day. It is just that simple.
